Morgan Tidbits

A few things from the past few days. David is at his annual trade show in Las Vegas and we are missing him. Morgan loves it when Daddy gets her up in the morning and is woefully disappointed when I've been showing up in her room each day. That's alright. There are plenty of other things she prefers that Mama does.

On Monday night I was talking with David on the phone as I was putting the girls' dinner together. I told them dinner was ready and to come sit down. Then I watched, mesmerized as Morgan went to the refrigerator, opened the door and pulled out the milk jug. Keep in mind, she can only do this when there is not a lot of milk in it...way too heavy otherwise. Then, she put it on the counter and pulled a stool up to it. She then got on the stool chose two glasses from the drying rack and set them side-by-side on the counter. Still amazed, I watched her open the milk and pour an equal amount of milk into each glass (basically using up what was left in the jug. Wow. She has never done this before, nor did I know she could if she wanted to. Well, I knew she could, but I'd never tested out the theory. She was so proud of herself and praised her and gave her big hugs. I had been giving David the play-by-play, so he praised her via speakerphone. I've got to figure out a way to put the milk in a smaller container so she can do this whenever she wants!

Morgan's teacher called today during school time. At first I was worried something was wrong, but she reassured me that Morgan was fine. She usually emails me information or interesting things Morgan does. Today they were working on "why" questions. They would give specific examples like "Why do we wear a jacket?" Answer, "Because it's cold outside." Or, "Why do we eat our hot dogs?"..."Because we're hungry." Her teacher decided to have one of the assistants ask Morgan the question again about the hot dog. She asked "Morgan, why did you eat your hot dog?" She had asked it a little differently so they wondered how she'd answer. Morgan answered, "Because I wanted a cookie." Ha ha! This is great because she wasn't just memorizing a rote answer, she was thinking about it and answering spontaneously! This is also so Morgan...she has some things she'll eat no matter what, but some foods she'll eat if she knows she'll get a treat. This was apparently one of those!

Finally, during the NFC finals on Sunday David was really fired up about the 49ers. He always is, but with the Super Bowl at stake he was even more passionate. Morgan (and Piper too), get a little upset when David yells at the TV, players, refs, etc. even if it's something good. Morgan was trying to get David's attention for something and suddenly busted out "SERIOUSLY!!!" She had the total sarcastic inflection too. She knew she was saying something funny because she immediately cracked herself up. Maybe we have a little comedic personality coming through?!

Wednesday - Not Wordless

We're planning a short trip to Seattle for this weekend, so I thought I'd get in a blog entry before we left. I also don't have any good pictures for this week, but I'm sure we'll have lots next week. Here's a few tidbits of what Morgan's been up to lately:

* Getting to sleep at night has been a challenge. It usually takes her a while to actually fall asleep once she's in her crib for the night. Aside from the increased lovey/blankie throwing problems she just doesn't settle easily. We've tried an earlier bedtime as well as a later bedtime with no luck. She just needs time to wind down. I'm going to ask the pediatrician about this at her 18 month appointment tomorrow.

* We've had somewhat of a reprieve on the picky eating in the last week or so. Yay! I'm sure it's just a phase though. I've tried foods again that she rejected before and she's actually been eating them. Hmmm. I guess they say it takes over 10 tries with some foods. She still doesn't go for breaded items much...what kid doesn't like fish sticks and chicken fingers? She also doesn't toss her food on the floor so much anymore. We're not sure if we did anything different, but we like it!

* Morgan does a strange thing with books. She'll bring me one to read, then when we're done she'll go get another one. BUT, when David reads her a book, she'll won't go get another one if I'm in the room...she'll bring me the same book to read that her daddy just read to her. So odd.

* She's learned to go down the stairs on her own now. The only thing I have to do is make sure she sits at the top of the stairs with her feet out in front of her. Then she will turn around and go down backwards. Otherwise she keeps trying to go head first by putting her hands down on the first step. Yikes! She's almost there.

* She still doesn't have a lot of words, but has continued to figure out some sign language. She correctly uses the "more" sign (fingertips together) and sometimes uses "all done". This sign though is a lot of frantic hand and arm waving instead of more controlled twisting back and forth of her hands...but it gets the point across. Hee hee!

Overall Morgan is just such a fun little girl! She laughs and smiles a lot and loves to explore her surroundings. We will have more fun info and pictures when we get back from Seattle!

Tidbits from Toddler-dom

I'm not sure we can really say officially "toddler-dom" as it seems Morgan still has no interest in walking. She does tons of cruising and crawling, but still no progress anything independent. Anyway, she certainly doesn't seem to be much of a baby anymore...have you noticed how tall this girl is?! Here are a few tidbits:

* We ditched the bedtime sippy cup this weekend. She had eaten a particularly large dinner that night (can we say WHOLE veggie burger...yikes!) so I knew she didn't need the milk to get her through the night. When it came time when we usually give her the cup, she looked around for it, but didn't complain when it wasn't there. Check that one off the list!

* She finally cut her fourth bottom tooth. She had been really fussy at tooth brushing time for a week or so, so we think this was the culprit. We've been waiting for that tooth for a few months. Next should be the first molars and I hear they can be really painful. Hopefully she'll get a little break before they start coming in.

* She still is pretty much on a two nap schedule. Occasionally I mess her up with some morning activities and she occasionally refuses the morning nap, but I think she will keep that one for a bit longer.

* We are hearing lots of new sounds, but no new real words lately. I'm not sure what the developmental "rules" say, but we hope she's still on track. She somehow figures out how to communicate though. We are getting more protest yelling and she kind of sticks her arm/hand out towards something when she wants it. Not really pointing, but she gets the idea across.

* Sleeping is still pretty good. Except for one random night of midnight playtime a few days ago, she sleeps from about 8:15-7:15 or so. This morning my alarm went off at 7 am and I looked at the monitor to find her still asleep. Yay! I fell back asleep and woke up at about 7:50 am and she was playing quietly in her crib. I wonder how long she'd been awake? Who knows?

* We've started "time outs". She doesn't really get it yet, but I read that you can start at this age. Usually I put her in the designated spot and she just crawls away. Yesterday she was getting into a cabinet she wasn't supposed to be in and I did the whole warning thing...then picked her up and put her in time out. She looked at me, then lowered her head and started crying. She'd had a bit of a rough day with sleeping/napping, but I wondered if maybe she actually "got it." I left her there for a few seconds then picked her up and told her loved her. Today I had to do time out and she just crawled away again. Sigh. It's all progress, right?

Overall, Morgan is just a lot of fun! Sometimes I wish I had a break, but as soon as I get one I miss her like crazy!! I love her kisses and laughs. She can really get going sometimes! She loves to raise her arms above her head so we'll say "so BIG!" And she never gets enough of her Old MacDonald. Someday she'll join us on the EIEIOs!

Behind

Sorry I'm so behind on new posts. We've been busy with birthday stuff and I actually forgot all about my blog. So distracted.

Here's a few tidbits from the last few days:

* Morgan had her first childcare meltdown since she was 4 months old. I went to my every-other-Tuesday bible study at church yesterday. Morgan has been so great in the childcare there as well as at church on Sundays. Everyone always comments on how good she is. She just plays and doesn't cry. We'll that all ended yesterday. I walked in the room after our group and one of the caregivers was holding her. She looked like she'd been crying already, but as soon as she saw me she burst into tears! I took her from the caregiver and she whined and cried for a little while longer. I also felt terrible because I was about to leave again. Our small group planned a lunch that day, so she would have to stay a few more hours. I got her calmed down a bit, but as soon as I had to go she started to cry again. All I could do was leave my cell phone number and go. Luckily I didn't get any calls and apparently she calmed down. When I came back she cried a little, but not as much as before. It could be the start of some separation anxiety.

* We've been doing a little practicing at blowing out candles prior to the birthday party. David and I were shocked that on the second time we tried it, she did it! We demonstrated for her a few times with the candles so she could see how to do it. I also blew gently in her face a little, so she got the idea of blowing the air out of her mouth. Much of the time she tries to touch the flame...not so good, but she has managed to blow it out a few times. We'll keep practicing. Who knows what will happen with a bunch of people watching her?

* Morgan LOVES her milk! We've been successful at switching to whole milk in a sippy cup for all meals. I think tonight will be the last bottle of formula at bedtime. Then we'll do milk in the bottle, until we decide to stop the bottle. I'm going to see what the pediatrician recommends at her appointment on Monday. I think we've done great getting her down to one bottle at this point. I think it might be harder on me than her to stop the last bottle. She's still a little baby! I'm just afraid that if we don't drop all bottles soon, she'll get too attached. And after that it will be on to weaning the pacifier from naps and bedtime. Ugh.

Tales and Tidbits

Morgan is doing and saying new things everyday. Here are a few of the latest:

* There is a lot more yelling going on. We were in Costco the other day. I took Morgan in the cart in one direction and David went to look for something in another aisle. A few minutes later Morgan decided (for whatever reason) to stating yelling at the top of her lungs. At that point David was coming back to the cart. He said to a nearby shopper, "Is that my baby making all that noise." She laughed. Yes, its cute for now, but she does in more and more frequently in public. Hmmm...

* She has a new phrase that sounds like either "dit doe" or "da doe." She says it so much we're wondering if it actually means something. David likes to repeat it back to her and she she says it back to him again. When she says the "doe" part her lips make a little "o" shape. Too cute.

* She's walking better and better with her "walk n ride" toy. We don't have to follow so close behind her anymore in case she falls. She does veer to the left quite often though...

* Morgan has become quite attached to what we call her "Horsey Cow." I think it's actually a giraffe, minus the long neck...odd. But she just LOVES it! It came attached to a flower arrangement when she was born and then sat on her changing table when she was a teeny-tiny. Now he's the first toy she plays with in the morning. She'll hold him out to us and we'll take him and shake him (it's a stuffed toy/rattle)...sometimes I'll give him silly kisses. All this time she laughs and makes screeching sounds. Then she wants him back pretty quick or she'll cry. The other day Horsey Cow needed a bath very badly. I put him on top of the washer and unfortunately Morgan saw him as we left for church yesterday. David had to do some quick distracting to avoid a meltdown. She was thrilled to see him this morning all clean and fresh! I'll have to get an updated picture soon, but this one from when she was first noticing things around her at about 7 weeks old.
